Yeah, I know I tend to harp on making a pantry, but if you don't have one, you don't even realize what you're missing.
The last three weeks we've been living off of our pantry because we had to. Money was so tight, there wasn't any extra for food. So really it's best to pay attention to the food you buy, and make sure it's what your family will eat and that you can make many different meals with what you have.
There are websites devoted to food pantry meals, and even yahoo groups where everyone is challenged to make a weeks worth of meals for their family from just what they have in their food pantry. How about that?
I'm not one of those people who think you need to have food all over the place, just what you'd need if there was a hurricane (we went through three one right after another one year) so we found out what we should have done differently.
A lot of people don't want to be bothered to cook from scratch any more. I just got a part time job, and hope one day to be working full time somewhere. Thats where crock pots and Once A Month Cooking come in handy! I've already started making a little more than we need certain days a week so I can freeze ziplocks of leftovers (don't have enough plastic containers yet) for microwaving single portions or complete dinners. I like to cut out the middleman, those heat and eat meals from the grocery store. Make it yourself and freeze it yourself, then you KNOW what its got in it. The sodium content won't be sky high.
