One thing you might not have thought of to put away for emergencies is a pitcher pump. We used to keep one for years, then one day my husband made a fountain out of it. Now we realize what boobs we were and will try to purchase another one.
If there is a catastrophic emergency and you need to get to water but all the wells have electric pumps and there is no electricity, you can put a pitcher pump on the well. Back when we bought the one we had, it was only fifty dollars, I'm sure the price has jumped. This could get a lot of water to those who need it. We never know, and it's best to be prepared.
On my bringbacksimplicity yahoo group MJ told how to put the pitcher pump on. I'm posting her instructions in case it can help someone.
"First check to see if the water is good in the well. Then, you are wanting just a hand pump, get pipe, and a footvalve, and hand pump
I attach the footvalve to the pipe. DO NOT put the footvalve on the very bottom of well. make sure it is a few feet up so it won't pull up dirt and ruin your valve. prime pipe and add the pump. That is pretty much all there is to it. Hope this helps, MJ"
