Good Morning!
I wanted to tell you what I'm doing and what some others I know are doing as well, in order to encourage you to be a little more neighborly.
My parents have nice neighbors who happen to be friends of mine as well. We were talking the other day about how high the food prices are going, and what are we going to do to afford it.
They asked if we would be interested in going in with them to make a big raised bed garden. My parents are included in on it, so expenses will be split three ways. I jumped at the chance! I'm not that great at gardening, but the neighbor used to own a nursery, so he does know how to grow plants. This will not only be a fun project that we can work together on, but it will help out in these uncertain times.
I want to take it a little further, and have made up a list of additional things that I can bring to the neighborly table. There s homemade yogurt, homemade sausage, homemade beverages that can be made from tamarind pods, hibiscus flowers, gingerroot, elder flowers, blackberry leaves, papaya leaves, chaya leaves, mango leaves, and probably many others I still have to learn about.
We can pressure can up meats, vegetables, broths, even butter and milk.
We can make jellies from fruits and herbs.
We can make flat breads or loaf breads, whatever, and share with each other.
We each will bring our talents to the table and have a discussion about what we can do, and make a plan to carry these things out.
Surviving is not all about you alone, it's helping your neighbor, and them helping you. Our children and grandchildren need to see the spirit of selflessness instead of selfishness in us. How else can they learn unless we show them. For some of us, it's a new thing to get acquainted with the neighbors and to accomplish something that will benefit two or more families. I feel this is a step in the right direction to encourage all of us to live peaceably together.
Have a wonderful day!
