Back when I was a kid, we had to use an outhouse. In that outhouse was toilet paper, but there was also a big fat catalog just in case the toilet paper ran out. Catalogs were handy for boosting little kids up so they could eat at the dinner table with the big folks. I used to dream about what I would buy if I could buy anything in the catalogs and mark them up unmercifully before they were toted off to outhouse.
I have been painting some seashells and put down newspaper so the paint wouldn't make a mess. A little bit ago I got a shock when I saw a link to read newspapers online. The website said SAVE A TREE, stop destroying nature and read the news online! Now what, will we lose newspapers too? Oh, I'm fired up about it alright. Things are happening so fast, surely even our children can see times are changing right in front of their eyes. Of course they see it as PROGRESS, but those of us who remember simplicity and the way it really was way back when, just shudder at the thought of what is going to be changed next. Don't get me started, it could turn political, and you know we don't want to go there.
Maybe I'm just feeling a little bit like an antique after seeing something called a Kindle where you can read any book, magazine or newspaper from a little bitty handheld device. Thats progress? Somebody pass the magnifying glass!
I want my good comforting simplicity back. Simple food, simple hair care, not a shelf full of products. Did you know you can wash your hair with a handful of baking soda and water? Yeah, and rinse your hair with a jarful of apple cider vinegar mixed with warm water. Pretty shiny, soft hair for just pennies.
There are a lot of products you can cut out of your life once you go buy vinegar, baking soda, salt, grapefruitseed extract (my favorite), tea tree oil and a few other small purchases that will last quite a while. Okay, one day soon I'll post how to use these things. You'll be surprised. Save what money you have for something you really need that you can't make yourself.
People seem to be catching on that it's not embarrassing to be frugal. It's really the smartest thing in the world to do. It's about time, but in the meantime many of the things we used to take for granted may be a thing of the past. Oh, I've started getting those old lady catalogs and I saw a "Classic typewriter" in there. When you sat in typing class at school did you ever think those things would become outdated? They don't use electricity, and it's good exercise for the hands. What a frugal thing to have in the house. But then you have to go mail letters off to all your friends who won't write back to you because they all have email or cell phones.
There are a lot of simple, frugal things left, but we have to really hunt for them. If we don't use them, it's our own fault.
Have a great day!
