If you get a pump 'n' seal ( www.pump-n-seal.com ), the attachment for storing in canning jars comes with it. The pump 'n' seal costs way less than other food vacuums and doesn't require electricity. I use mine constantly. You can't re-use the canning jar lids for anything else, because you have to put a tiny hole in the lid to vacuum the air out, but you can re-use them for sealing dried foods. I've been using my pump 'n' seal for about three years now and I'm still on the same lids I started with.
