We live out in the country, have our critters, but we're talking about just what all should we do to help make life easier ?? We like to talk about it with others...I mean its to the point of either raising more homegrown food, or going to get a part time job at Walmart... what a tough decision. Elaine and Mark

I think you need to make a list... you know pros and cons?
How much would you really "make" going to work part time. Factor in the cost of transportation, food stuffs (if different from being at home) and of course the cost of all the things that would be more difficult/costly because you are losing the time to the "job".
Then make a list of what raising more food would require and how you would benefit.
It definitely is an individual decision and would depend on your particular circumstances but in my case 20 hours/week would be better spent in raising my food. Can't do anything other than garden here but the loss of the time for making things from scratch (very important to us) in addition to the added stress of keeping the house running properly would outway the small increase in income.
The next place we purchase will be with the knowledge that we want to raise some animals.
Hope that helps.

I guess we all have our own idea of what we would do "if only" we had property situated in the right state, and could build whatever we wanted.... I would have every tropical fruit that could possibly grow in Florida, all the wild food possible, raise all my own animals...all we can do is what we're doing now, I can't afford to wait for land. If we lived in the city, right now I would have rabbits in the house (breeding for food), and perhaps raise Tilapia, since that is a particularly popular thing to do in the city. Plus I'd be using sprouting seeds for extra nutrition...which I'd better get off here and go get some started for the week!!! Getting lazy here.....

Great idea with the list of pros and cons. Once you figure out how much it costs you to work part time, sometimes it's not worth it.

Great idea with the list of pros and cons. Once you figure out how much it costs you to work part time, sometimes it's not worth it. Yes that is so true. In my case if I was to take a part time job my husband would have an additional $65 in taxes every two weeks taken off his income since I would not be able to be claimed as a dependant (too much income). Once I saw that I thought there was no advantage to me working part time. I am extremely lucky that he sees the benefits financially as well as the benefits to both his and my mental health when I stay home full time.

I am in Greece, for the last 10 years, Europe for the last 20. So, you may think I don't have anything significant to contribute. I do have some advice in the madness. I was SHOCKED by fresh produce prices at my family's local outlet, WALMART Super Center. I purchased fresh vegetables for Easter dinner, at more than twice European Organically grown prices!!! Land prices are sky-high here (we are registered farmers, although we do NOT get our primary income from that enterprise). GARDEN, RAISE YOUR OWN! or shop at local farmer's markets!!! Even if you don't buy organic, LOCAL produce is fresher and safer for you AND supports the local economy!! This is more important than any of us can ever know!
