Homemade Natural things you CAN make
buy good quality essential oils at my local health food store (they
are between 4 and 9 dollars for a bottle, but they go a LONG way-you
only need a drop or two for most recipes. I use empty prescription
bottles for most things. You can buy little spray bottles, pots,
jars, etc at dollar stores and thrift stores. Make small quantities
at a time-it only takes seconds, and since there are no
preservatives, you don't have to worry about a batch going bad.
TOOTHPASTE-mix a paste of baking soda,a pinch of sea salt, a dab of
virgin coconut oil and a couple of drops of pepperming (or cinnimon,
spearmint, etc) essential oil together and store in an empty
prescription bottle.
MOUTHWASH/BREATH SPRAY-mix a couple of drops of peppermint oil in
spring water. Add a couple of drops of pure vodka. Shake well. For
breath spray, pour a little of the mixture into a small spray bottle.
SHAMPOO-liquid castille soap (health food store-I use doctor bronners
brand. Its cheaper to buy it by the gallon) Add a couple of drops of
your favorite scented oil (I like lavender) and a few drops of light
olive oil. Use as regular shampoo.
HAIR GEL/SPRAY. For gel, make a paste with a little agar agar powder
and warm water. (it will gel to a hard stage in just a matter of
minutes) To use, break off a small piece of the gel, and rub it
between your palms with a little more warm water to "re-liquidize"
it, then apply to shampood, towel dried hair. For hair spray, mix a
small amount of the powder with about 2 cups of water. Shake very
well before each use.
LAUNDRY SOAP-mix a small amount of castille soap, powdered borax,
scented oil (again, I like lavender for the laundry) and a few spoons
full of table salt with warm water. I mix this up in an empty mayo
container. Use about 1/3 cup per load. Add about 1/4 cup white
vinegar scented with oil to the rinse water.
DISHWASHER SOAP-Add about 1/3 cup of baking soda to about 2 cups of
borax, a few drops of castille soap, and a couple of drops of scented
oil. Add a couple of spoons of table salt. When you are ready to
wash, pour about 1/2 cup of the mix into the soap dispenser of the
dishwasher. Just as you are ready to close the dishwasher door, pour
in about a cup of white vinegar-it will foam like crazy! Just close
the door and run the washer as usual. Does a great job!
FABRIC SOFTNER-I keep an old washcloth just for this purpose. Wet
the washcloth with warm water and wring it out. Add a small smear of
virgin coconut oil scented with essential oil and rub it in. Chuck
the cloth in with the load of clothes as they dry. When I feel
ambitious, I cut up some muslin cloth into small squares and pretreat
them with the mixture, then store them in an old baby wipes container.
HAND SANITIZER/WIPES. Cut some muslin cloth (I find this at thrift
store all of the time-I wash it before use. You can rewash these
over and over and reuse them. Place the cloth squares in an old baby
wipes container. Add enough peroxide, scented with your choice of
oils to moisten the cloths. Keep in your car, or in a plastic baggie
in your purse. Great for freshening up while out!
HOUSEHOLD CLEANER-1/2 water 1/2 peroxide, and a few drops of lemon
oil. Add a splash of pure vodka, rubbing alcohol, or white vinegar
for cutting grease.
TOILET BOWL CLEANER-Pour some borax into an old mayo or mason jar.
Add a little baking soda, and a few drops of oil. Pour about 1/2 cup
into toilet bowl, brush and let stand for a few minutes, then flush.
For tough stains, pour in a small bottle of COCA COLA! The phosporic
acid will clean the most stubborn stains! Its the only thing I use
soda for. People often wonder why I have a bottle of coke beside my
toilet, but none in my kitchen! LOL
LIP GLOSS-Mix some beetroot powder (health food store) with a little
virgin coconut oil or shea butter. Mix with a toothpic, and store in
a used lip gloss pot. Makes lips very kissable!
SHEA BUTTER-pure, additive free-from the health food store. I use
this stuff as a deoderant, moisturizer, body balm, etc. Absorbs
right into skin, keeps it super soft.
FACE ASTRINGENT-Witch hazel with a few drops of cucumber juice-(I
just chuck a slice of peeled cuke into the container of witch hazel-
my daughter uses this every day, and her skin is glowing!
AFTER BATH SPLASH/BODY SPRAY. Add a few drops of your favorite
essential oil to some spring water. Add just a touch of vodka or
rubbing slcohol, if you like a more cooling spray. Splash on after
bath, or put in a spritz bottle.
