(this is info we need to be discussing here)
There's been a lot of discussion about stocking up on food and water, which is fine for a relatively short term disruption of society. Not many people have the space to put food and water by for more than a couple of weeks. What concerns me is the permanent disruption of society, and to cope with that we need a lot more than just food and water.
Here are some of the things I have put away:
» sewing needles and thread (100% cotton thread, not that polyester-wrapped junk)
» scissors
» any clothing that comes into my hands, whether I can wear it or not. Someone will be able to wear it, or it can be re-cut to make another item
» common household tools, such as hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, hand saws, etc. I already have a full workshop of hand tools, because I do woodworking, but I've also purchased additional things to pack away.
» pencils
» common sizes of nails and screws and other fasteners
» extra kitchen cutlery, vegetable peelers, paring knives, similar items that will store compactly
That's a partial list. Every time I think of something, I try to buy one or two of them (small things, hand tools, not expensive stuff) whenever I have a chance and put them away in plastic tubs. None of this stuff has to be protected from extremes of temperature like food does, so it can be stored in places where you wouldn't want to store food. I pre-wrap most things in heavy duty freezer bags first, and then pack them into plastic tubs and stack the tubs on a little platform I built in the back yard. It's covered with a tarp to keep the weather and sun off the tubs. I realize that isn't feasible for everyone, just tossing ideas out.
