I know that many of us were very prepared in 1999 for Y2K, and fortunately it was not needed.
However, I am wondering if anyone who did not prepare at all back in 1999 sees a need to prepare for survival now that our world seems to be obviously crumbling.
When we went to Walmart to get some extra water and flashlight batteries the other night, we were so relieved to see the store was not crowded and there was still plenty of food on the shelves.
Walmart obviously learned their lesson last year when they didn't have enough and fights actually broke out among customers.
We try to keep a constant supply of food and rotate it, water, well, I really don't want a lot of water sitting around here, it's just too hot and I hate that plastic smell. However I'm not saying we don't keep water.
This time around in doing emergency preps, we were smart enough to get a generator, have a propane stove, buy a really good fan and nice long cord to plug fan into generator so we don't die from the heat....we quickly found out that if you can't sleep comfortably, you are a wretch to live with during the day!
I'm stocking foods that we LIKE. Crackers, tuna, relish, mayo, gravies(because I suck at making good gravy), dried potato flakes, rice, canned diced tomatoes, gatorade, tortillia flour (we have a tortillia press) oil, cold cereal, powdered milk, containers of whey protein powder(at Walmart they run about $11.95) good to keep your strength up when mixed with water or powdered milk, canned fruits (we craved fruit so much when we were hot and without electricity, and that was the first food that got eaten up) Jars of pickled beets (sooooo comforting if you like this stuff in emergency situations, it's both sweet and salty, creamed corn, was sweet and creamy, satisfied that desire.
THINGS WE WILL AVOID THIS TIME AROUND!!!!
This time around, hubby and I decided we would stay away from anything sweet. The first time we bought tons of cookies, candy, hot chocolate, sodas, etc....
In the long run, we decided that it did far more harm than good. It weakened our immune system, was only a comfort for that moment, and was simply a not so costly easily avoidable mistake.
This time we are looking at foods that will sustain us, give us energy so we will not be fuzzy headed, irritable, or become ill easily.
I suggest for greens, chlorella, spirulina, seeds meant for sprouting, alfalfa tablets as supplements during times of stress, but then, life is stressful enough to need these on a daily basis, so how much more should we need to put them in our emergency preps???
